In the movie version of life, when you walk into a bakery, it looks like The Cle Elum Bakery. With it’s exposed brick and sunny wood floors, the Movie-Version-You is instantly set at ease as you inhale the warm coffee-laden air.

Movie-Version-You walks, with leisure and confidence, past sheets of doughnuts (in the movie version, even the word “donut” looks better) to the register where you order a box full of sweets, some baguettes and a coffee.

The beautiful woman behind the counter smiles and instantly a box, a bag and a cup appear before you. With defiantly good hair and an incredibly high metabolism, you step out onto the street, pause to feel the sunny breeze on your face and head to your movie-version-car.

In real life, when you enter the Cle Elum Bakery you immediately press your face against the glass case. The maple bars and sprinkle cake donuts sing like topless sirens on a rock.

In the background someone whines. It takes a moment for you to realize that the whine is coming from you.

Bargaining begins: If you are really good if you can have five of everything.

The bread smells so yeasty and toasty that you immediately think of the four sandwiches you cannot live without. There’s a warmth to the place that can only come from a century-old oven (really).

If you go next door to The Bakery House (where the restroom is), you realize that there are even more sandwiches that you cannot live without.

At the Bakery House, you’ll find yourself charmed. Not just movie-version charmed, but real-life charmed. The old light fixtures, doorknobs and wood floors make you want to go buy a leather-bound journal and write your memoirs.

So welcoming is this little place that I forgot the words “gluten-free” and ordered a tuna sandwich on Rye. It was a sandwich that I will never regret.
