When autumn arrives in Northeast Washington, the best way to experience it is from the open road. Forests turn brilliant shades of gold, red and orange, crisp mountain air settles over the landscape, and winding highways lead to lakes, rivers, forests and communities with stories to tell.

At the heart of it all is Republic, a mountain town surrounded by outdoor adventure and scenic roads. With its historic downtown, access to the Colville National Forest and miles of trails and waterways nearby, Republic makes an ideal starting point for a fall road trip.

One of the best ways to experience autumn around Republic is to get behind the wheel and follow the road. The Sherman Pass Scenic Byway begins just outside town on SR 20, climbing through the Colville National Forest toward Sherman Pass, Washington’s highest maintained mountain pass at 5,575 feet.

In fall, the forest takes on a whole new personality. Stands of western larch turn brilliant gold against the deep green of evergreen trees, while maples and aspen trees add shades of yellow, orange and red. Pull over at one of the scenic viewpoints, stretch your legs and take in the expansive views across the Kettle River Range.

The route also offers glimpses into the region’s past. The Sherman Pass area was once traveled by Native peoples and later became a route through gold country. Along the way, you can see remnants of the Civilian Conservation Corps era and an old log flume that once carried timber down the mountains.

The beauty of a fall road trip here is that there is no need to rush. Leave some room in the day for an unexpected viewpoint, a short hike or a quiet picnic surrounded by the sounds of the forest. Cooler temperatures make it comfortable to hike, bike and explore the area's extensive trail network, while the changing foliage adds a spectacular backdrop.

The Ferry County Rail Trail is one of the area's favorite recreational experiences. Stretching more than 25 miles through forests and wetlands, the trail passes along Curlew Lake and provides access to scenic landscapes around the Kettle River. The route follows an old railroad grade, making it a relatively gentle way to experience the countryside by bike or on foot.

Curlew Lake is another great place to enjoy the season. Just north of Republic, the lake is surrounded by forested hills and offers opportunities for fishing, boating, wildlife viewing and photography. As the leaves begin to change, the shoreline becomes another excellent place to slow down and enjoy the colors.

After a day on the road or trail, head back to Republic and spend some time exploring the town. Republic's history is deeply connected to gold mining, logging and the natural resources of the surrounding mountains, and that heritage remains part of its identity today. Stroll along the main avenue and explore local shops and cafes or stop for a coffee before heading out for another adventure. Keep an eye out for the local deer that are known to wander through town.

For an experience that goes much further back than Republic's mining history, visit Stonerose Interpretive Center. The site is known for its 50-million-year-old Eocene fossils, and visitors can search for their own fossils and even take one home. It's a unique experience that adds another layer to a trip through this fascinating corner of Washington.

No trip to Republic is complete without a stop at Republic Brewing Company for a locally crafted beer, handmade soda and a bite to eat in the historic fire hall. It is the kind of place where a day spent exploring the mountains naturally turns into an evening of conversation and good food. This is a great place to meet the locals!

One of the pleasures of fall in Northeast Washington is the freedom to make the journey your own. Follow a scenic byway over the mountains, take a side road toward a lake, explore a trail through the forest or spend an afternoon discovering the history beneath your feet. Republic puts all these experiences within easy reach, with plenty of reasons to get outside and stay awhile.
